Motorhome rental companies usually aren’t based in the city center, but rather in the suburbs and in the vicinity of the airport, where most car rental agencies are located too. However, as they aren’t accessible on foot from the airport, you will need to take a taxi or use a shuttle.

What it costs to hire a campervan in Sydney
Rates swing enormously — for the same vehicle you might pay AUD 60 or AUD 250 a day depending on when you travel and how early you book. The season matters far more than which company you choose.

What actually moves the price
- Season, by a long way. May to August is the cheapest window in Sydney. December, January and Easter are the worst — vehicles sell out months ahead and rates can triple.
- How far ahead you book. Six months out gets you early-bird rates. Two weeks out in December gets you whatever’s left.
- Length of hire. Past 14 days the daily rate falls sharply; past 21 days most operators have a separate long-term tariff. If you’re visiting several regions, one long hire beats two short ones.
- Vehicle age. Cheapa Campa (Apollo) and Mighty (Britz) run older vehicles from the parent fleets — mechanically fine, cosmetically tired, noticeably cheaper.
- Shower and toilet on board. The single biggest jump in price — but it also unlocks free camping in self-contained-only sites, which can pay for itself over a long trip.
The costs people forget
- Excess reduction: AUD 30–45 a day. Without it you’re liable for AUD 5,000–7,500, held on your credit card at pick-up. A standalone excess policy is usually far cheaper than the counter version.
- Fuel. A campervan uses 10–14 L/100 km. The national average was around AUD 1.75–1.80 per litre in mid-2026, but 2026 has been volatile — check a live source before a long drive rather than budgeting on a fixed figure.
- Campsites: AUD 25–60 a night for a powered site. Free camping is widespread in NSW if your vehicle is self-contained.
- One-way fees. See below — this catches almost everyone.
⚠️ One-way hires: budget for the drop-off fee
All three itineraries further down this page are one-way trips — you drop the vehicle in a different city from where you collected it. Operators charge a relocation fee for that, and it isn’t small: from around AUD 100 on short routes to several hundred on Sydney–Cairns.
Two ways around it. Some operators waive the fee seasonally on specific routes — ask directly before booking, it’s rarely advertised. And look at relocation deals: rental companies constantly need vehicles moved back, and release them for a nominal daily rate, often with fuel included. The catch is fixed dates and a tight deadline. If your plans are flexible, it’s the cheapest road trip in Australia.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park
The Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is about 30 minutes north of Sydney at the mouth of the Hawkesbury River. The park offers an interesting mix of Aboriginal history and beautiful scenery.
Royal National Park
Located about 30 minutes south of Sydney, the Royal National Park is a beautiful seaside nature park. If the tide permits it, you can see the famous Figure Eight Pools.
Featherdale Wildlife park
Located about 30 minutes from Sydney, Featherdale Wildlife Park has the largest collection of Australian animals in the world. Smaller than the Taronga Zoo, it offers close proximity to animals.

Southern Highlands
The Southern Highlands is an area about an hour and a half south of Sydney. Among the many places to visit, you’ll find vineyards, caves, national parks as well as a ghost town. This town, called the city of Joadja, used to be a mining town abandoned in the early twentieth century.
Blue Mountains
Located about 1h30 west of Sydney, the Blues Mountains are a must-see in this area. They owe their name to the seemingly bluish mist emanating from the Eucalyptus trees. The park has an area of 1436km², so you won’t be bored!
Jenolan Caves
Set in the Blue Mountains, these are among the oldest and most spectacular cave systems in the world — around 340 million years old, with eleven caves open to guided tours. Book ahead: tours fill up, and access roads occasionally close after heavy rain.
Morisset
About two hours north of Sydney, the grounds around Morisset Hospital are famous for their resident kangaroos, which are used to people and easy to photograph. Don’t feed them — it’s what turns a relaxed mob into an aggressive one.
Hunter Valley
Australia’s oldest wine region, two hours north of Sydney, with more than 150 cellar doors. If you’re driving a campervan, plan a designated driver or stay the night — the 0.05 limit is enforced hard on the way home.

Australia’s roads are all well maintained. Driving in Australia is very pleasant. However, here are some tips for a smooth ride:
- Luckily for UK drivers, driving is on the left hand side of the road, just like home.
- Speed limits are strict and controlled. In general 110 km/h on main or rural roads and 50 km/h in built up areas. If in doubt, refer to the road signs.
- Alcohol: 0.05 is the limit for full licence holders. If you’re on a learner or provisional licence — including some overseas equivalents — the limit is zero. Random breath testing is routine and frequent, and it isn’t a formality.
