A guide written by Backpackers for backpackers!

Why did we write this Guide?

Like you, we had the wonderful idea of spending a year in Australia with the Working Holiday Visa. We realised that a lot of practical information was essential to prepare for this adventure. During our stay, we discovered lots of tips, and like most backpackers, we were disappointed by the guidebook we’d bought. Not because it was of poor quality, but simply because it wasn’t adapted to our lifestyle.

This isn’t just a trip, you’re not here as a tourist… and that makes all the difference. Half the pages in tourist guides are devoted to hotels and restaurants that you probably won’t go to, and often there are no photos! Finally, we didn’t have any practical information on job hunting, administrative procedures before and after leaving, campervan hire, etc. We didn’t even know how to find a job.

We felt that creating a guide was the best way to share with you all the answers to our questions as backpackers:

  • What do I need to know before leaving for Australia?
  • What do I need to do when I arrive?
  • What is a road trip around Australia like?
  • How can I find a job to finance my trip?
  • How does the Australian tax system work?
  • What are the different regions of the country like and what are the best places to discover?
  • Which places are not necessarily worth the diversions?
  • How can I save money during my stay?
  • And if I want to stay in Australia… what should I do?

The advantages of the Backpackers’ Guide

This guide wasn’t written at a desk, it’s the result of almost 2 years on the roads of Australia, put together as we travelled. (We only managed a second WHV back then, as the 3rd year wasn’t available yet!) Everything inside has been tried and tested in the field, gathered into one practical format you can access anytime with or without internet.

We update it every year with input from other backpackers on their WHV, so the info stays current. The guide is fully illustrated, with calendars, maps and ready-made itineraries, adapt your route to the season, pick the spots that excite you, and build your very own road trip.

The “Travel Guide” section means you won’t miss a thing once you’re there. On top of all the practical info, you’ll spot handy little icons flagging the must-see spots, the best places to see wildlife, top fruit-picking areas and the best free camp sites.

In short: everything you need to know before you leave, what to do when you arrive, and all the best things to see across Australia — in one guide.
